Uman was part of the Commonwealth since 1569. In the modern city and the surrounding area the remains of many ancient settlements (26 attractions) were found: Tripoli culture, Late Bronze Age, Chornolis culture, Scythian times, cherniahivska culture, early-slovian, the period of Kievan Rus, late-medieval. The remains from the last are still found as Uman fortress and positions, and over 40 underground structures. The city also hosts famous arboretum Sofievka.

В Умані я була тричі, але при нагоді, знову хотіла б тут опинитися. Звичайно ж, в основному, заради парку «Софіївка», найвидатнішої уманської спадщини графа Потоцького. Кажуть екскурсоводи, що парк не поступається красою знаменитому Версалю під Парижем, Сан-Сусі в Німеччині біля Потсдама. Я бачила ці парки в Європі і повинна сказати, що трохи перебільшують наші екскурсоводи... Але в Україні - це правда - гарнішого парку годі й шукати!
