Uman was part of the Commonwealth since 1569. In the modern city and the surrounding area the remains of many ancient settlements (26 attractions) were found: Tripoli culture, Late Bronze Age, Chornolis culture, Scythian times, cherniahivska culture, early-slovian, the period of Kievan Rus, late-medieval. The remains from the last are still found as Uman fortress and positions, and over 40 underground structures. The city also hosts famous arboretum Sofievka.
