The Temple of Elijah the Prophet

0 2 0

The Ilyinsky Church was built in 1904 on the lands of Vasyl Protopopov. The temple is interesting with paintings, which are partially preserved on its walls and edifices. Art historians attribute these paintings to the famous school of Victor Vasnetsov – the author of famous frescos at the Vladimir Cathedral in Kyiv, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg, Russia, the monument to Alexander Nevsky in Sofia, Bulgaria, and others like that.

Worship in the temple did not last long. Already in 1931 the church was closed, and its building was renovated into a village club. The frescoes were partially covered with a layer of plaster, partly covered with wooden panels. In 1942 the worship resumed for a short time, but in the following year it stopped for a half-century.

Today in the Ilyinsky Church, you can see paintings depicting the scenes of the Last Supper, expulsion from Paradise, the Last Judgment, the sacrifice of Abraham and others.
