The Lower Berdiansk Lighthouse

0 1 0

The Lower Berdyansk lighthouse is one of the oldest buildings in Berdyansk, and today it pleases the eye of holidaymakers and brings great benefits to" those who are at sea". Its 23-meter-high octagonal tower with a red strip in the center was erected in the distant 1837. The contract to construct a lighthouse on the Berdyansk spit was won by Carlo Tomazini, Kerch merchant of the 1st Guild.

The Lower Berdyansk lighthouse was put into operation in 1840. As a light source, kerosene lamps were used. Half a century later, in 1883, electric lighting was installed on the lighthouse. It became the second lighthouse in the Russian Empire and the fourteenth lighthouse in the world with electric lighting.
