Regional historical museum of Hutsuls

According to his plan, the museum had become a base for research of Hutsuls and Eastern Carpathians in general.The idea of creating a museum belongs to a local official, the deputy of the Polish Sejm, ethnographer and folklorist, a distinctivel writer Petro Shekeryk-Donykiv. According to his plan, the museum had become a base for scientific researches of Hutsuls and Eastern Carpathians in general.Construction began at the beginning of 1936, and the opening of the building took place in February 18, 1938. The building has eight rooms: a kitchen, a bathroom, a laundry, a meteorological tower with two bedrooms, a room for scientists, several exhibition halls and a lecture-theater hall with a stage.The museum consisted of the following departments: natural sciences covering geological, mineralogical, botanical, zoological collections; ethnographical, introducing agricultural implements, household utensils, carved chests, pottery, images painted on glass, tiles, wood carving, Easter eggs, etc. were presented. A library has worked in the museum, where there were 1000 volumes. Along with the regional local history museum, a complex for year-round maintenance of Meteorological Observatory, a hostel and rooms for auxiliary service were built.The construction was developed and financed by Poland, England and France. Scientists conducted astronomical research. The rich material they published in scientific works. Archives did not survive after 1939. The beginning of World War II interrupted the observations. In 1940 and 1941 astronomers from Kiev partially restored them. With the coming of Soviet power border guards were placed in the house-museum. After the war the house was set on fire and then the walls were dismantled. Afterwards the museum was restored.The first exhibition was opened on December 31, 2004. Today five exhibition halls are opened.The exhibition acquaints visitors with nature, history, culture, everyday life and art of the Hutsul region, as well as activities of Hutsul societies and other culturological organizations.
