Skalat Castle

0 4 0

The castle in Skalat was founded by the Galician swordsman Krzysztof Wychrowski. Although archaeological excavations have shown that wooden fortifications existed here as early as the 14th century, the castle dates back to 1630. For centuries, Skalat has been an amphitheater of military action and raids. The castle was captured during the Liberation War of 1648-1657, devastated by the Tatar raids, destroyed during the First and Second World War. As a result, numerous reconstructions have greatly changed the original appearance of the building.

The four corner towers and defensive walls have been preserved to this day. The residential building and the inner garden were irretrievably lost.

But the Skalat Castle was lucky: it was added to the National Reserve "Castles of Ternopil", after which restoration began. Now the castle is open for excursions and those who want to hold photo sessions. Some of the towers have been turned into exhibition halls, which display archaeological finds, weapons, Ukrainian embroidered shirts and paintings by prominent artists. In the future, the castle will be turned into a full-fledged museum, and one of the towers will become a hotel for tourists.
