"Hurby" Valley

0 1 0

The Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) was founded in Rivne Region. It became a true phenomenon in Ukraine and worldwide, as well. Rebels waged guerrilla warfare for 12 (!) years. Hurby Battlе was the most numerous fight in the UPA’s history that happened on Easter, 1944. You can visit this place today. This fight is called Spartan because only 5 thousand Ukrainian rebels resisted to the highly-armed 35-thousand army of NKVS. The Bolsheviks called the operation successful because they succeeded in defeating «a gang of Ukrainian-German nationalists». At the same time, the rebels considered the battle tragic but victorious since they managed to save their capable forces. Nowadays the men's monastery is open in the valley "Hurby", in the place of the most numerous battle in the UPA’s history. Local community honors the memory of soldiers who were killed there each year on the third day of Easter.
