Painted Stone

0 2 0

Painted stone – a huge boulder of sandstone, covered with petroglyphs and carved stone bowls, geological natural monument of local importance in Ukraine is located a few kilometers south-east of the village of Bukovec and Bukovec pass. The oldest of the petroglyphs were carved in an era of Kievan Rus and they gave the name of the stone. Stone bowls indicate the existence of pagan temples, and local residents associated the origin of the stone with Oleksa Dovbush who hid his treasures beneath it. These cliffs offer a magnificent panorama of ridges and peaks, were often visited by Ivan Franko, Lesia Ukrainka, Mykhailo Kotsyubinsky and other prominent figures of Ukrainian culture.
