Cheese-Making Museum "Khata — Staya" in Verkhovyna

0 2 0

Established in 2014 in an authentic hundred-year-old Hutsul house, the museum showcases traditional mountain living. At its heart is the staya — an old-style cheese-making room where budz, vurda, and brynza were once prepared over an open fire. Such stayas were an essential part of the shepherding culture in the Hutsul region.

The rooms feature embroidered shirts, handwoven towels, wooden dishes, and other everyday items that reflect the daily life of the locals. In the oldest part of the house — a room with a large stove — visitors can see how a Hutsul family lived a century ago.

"Khata — Staya" is more than just a museum; it’s an interactive space where you can learn about cheese-making, taste traditional Hutsul delicacies, hear stories about shepherd customs, and take photos in the authentic atmosphere of a Carpathian home.
