Freedom Square

From the moment of its formation - Veterinary Square (until 1925), from its clear design (planning - 1923–1925, paving - 1930–1931) to 1942, it was called Dzerzhinsky Square (Russian: Дзержинского Square). In 1942, during the first Nazi occupation of Kharkiv, it was called the Platz der Wehrmacht (German Army Square). During the second Nazi occupation of Kharkiv, from late March 1943 to August 23, 1943, it was Platz der Leibstandarte SS, named after Adolf Hitler's 1st Leibstandarte SS Division, which captured the city. From 1943 to 1991 it was again called Dzerzhinsky Square. In 1991, the square received its modern name - Freedom Square.
